Wide receiver Jonathon Rumph from Holmes (Miss.) Community College on Thursday became the second junior college player to officially join the Georgia program during the midyear signing period.

“He is going to come in and compete for playing time immediately,” coach Mark Richt said. “When we bring junior college guys in, we really expect them to compete right away for playing time. Jonathon, he’s a very talented guy. We’re glad we’ve got him.”

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Rumph, from Cayce, S.C., also considered Mississippi State and Texas Tech among others. He joins a Georgia receiving corps that is losing seniors Tavarres King and Marlon Brown.

“He’s very fast,” Richt said. “He’s an explosive athlete.”

Rumph is rated as a four-star prospect by Scout.com and Rivals.com and is the nation’s No. 7 junior college prospect by ESPN.com and Johnson is No. 83. He played quarterback his senior season of high school.

He had 45 catches for 569 yards and three touchdowns this past season and 42 catches for 778 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman.

Rumph has three years of eligibility remaining to play two. He is one of five receiver commitments in this year’s Georgia class.

Georgia on Wednesday announced the signing of defensive lineman Chris Mayes from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

The 6-foot-3, 335-pound Mayes, who signed with Georgia in 2011 out of Spalding High in Griffin but did not qualify, will have three years to play three seasons after redshirting this season.

“The guy gets spring ball and three seasons, that’s really about as good as it gets,” Richt said. “Of course, he’s a big nose guard. Well, D-lineman. I don’t know if he’ll end up being a nose or not. He can play inside. He’s about a 330 pounder. He’s a very athletic kid, a guy we really liked out of high school. Just glad that he’s with us now.”
