Senior Lilly Kimbell punched her ticket to the singles qualifying draw at the 2013 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships with a win Sunday afternoon.
“It was a really good match for Lilly,” Georgia assistant coach Drake Bernstein said in a release. “She played well and played smart. She’s playing some good tennis right now and getting it done out on the court.”
Kimbell beat DePaul’s Jasmin Kling 6-1, 6-1 to advance into the tournament’s qualifying draw, which will start Tuesday. Kimbell will be joined by No. 60 Silvia Garcia who will also by vying for a spot in the main draw.
Also on Sunday, Kimbell and doubles partner Mia King were eliminated from the tournament as they fell to Catherine Harrison and Morgan Thomas of UCLA, 8-6. On Tuesday, the No. 50 duo of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase will being play in the doubles qualifying draw.
Part of the collegiate grand slam, the All-American Championships will host more than 200 players over a two-week period. Pre-qualifying began on Saturday and will be followed by the qualifying rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday. The main draw will begin on Thursday and last through the following weekend. Players in the qualifying draws must win three matches to advance to the next draw.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in New York, N.Y.
