UGA roundup: Ward’s walkoff hit help Bulldogs to seventh straight win

Nelson Ward drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to propel Georgia to a 4-3 walkoff win over visiting North Florida on Saturday at Foley Field.

Chelsea Wilkinson earned her 10th win of the season Saturday when Georgia beat Kent State.

Ward hit a bases-loaded single to right field to score Heath Holder and give Georgia (9-6) its seventh consecutive victory and its third walkoff win in the streak.

Relief pitcher Pete Nagal pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn his first win of the year.

Holder was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, an RBI and a run scored. Hunter Cole had a double and an RBI. Zack Bowers also had a double.

Conor Welton scored first for George off an RBI double from Cole. North Florida scored with a two-run home run from Alex Bacon in the top of the second.

Georgia answered with an RBI single from Stephen Wrenn that scored Skyler Weber.

North Florida tacked on another run in the third. Holder drove in a run from Bowers to tie the score at three in the bottom of the fourth.

Georgia plays Western Carolina at 3 p.m. today, the final day of the Bulldog Invitational.

Softball sweeps doubleheader

Georgia swept a doubleheader against Kent State and Purdue on Saturday to capture its 20th win of the season.

No. 18 Georgia earned a 5-2 win over Kent State and a 6-1 victory over Purdue in the Georgia Softball Invitational.

Paige Wilson was 5-for-7 on the day with two doubles, a walk and four RBIs.

Alex Hugo was 3-for-6 with two home runs, three runs, three RBIs and a walk. Chelsea Wilkinson picked up her 10th win of the season against Kent State. Geri Ann Glasco also notched her 10th win of the season against Purdue.

Georgia plays its final game of the UGA Softball Invitational at 11:30 a.m. today against Purdue.

Men’s golf moves into eighth in Las Vegas

Georgia carded a 13-over 301 in the second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas Saturday to move into eighth place.

Michael Cromie shot a 72 for No. 5 Georgia. Keith Mitchell finished with a 1-over 73. Lee McCoy and Greyson Sigg recorded 6-over 78s.

Cromie is eighth overall at 4-over 148. Georgia is 35-over 611 entering Sunday’s final round. Host UNLV holds the team lead with a 16-over 592.

Carbajo Re leads women’s golf team in South Carolina

Manuela Carbajo Re led Georgia with a 1-over 72 in the second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C., on Saturday.

Harang Lee shot a 73 and Amira Alexander, Rocio Sanchez Lobato and Mary Ellen Shurman shot 75s.

Georgia finished the day with an 11-over 295, bringing its two-day total to 612 and leaving the Bulldogs in 17th place heading into today’s final round.

Carbajo Re is tied for 10th overall. Lee is tied for 46th and Alexander is tied for 69th.
