UGA roundup: Troubles continue for UGA baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | No. 4 Florida State scored four runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth Saturday to take a 10-4 victory over Georgia, dropping the Bulldogs’ season record to 1-5.

Jared Cheek (0-2), the third of five Georgia pitchers utilized, was tagged with the loss, working one inning and giving up four earned runs on one hit and three walks. Sean McLaughlin started for the Bulldogs, pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks. Georgia pitchers surrendered 10 hits and seven walks, while striking out seven batters.

The Bulldogs’ offense was led by center fielder Hunter Cole, who had two hits – including his first home run of the season – and three RBIs. Second baseman Cody McChance accounted for Georgia’s only other RBI. Georgia recorded eight hits against seven Seminole pitchers.

Georgia and Florida State (6-0) will conclude their series today at 1:03 p.m.

Georgia softball rained out at Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. | The second day of play at the Citrus Classic was rained out Saturday, and No. 17 Georgia’s scheduled games against Delaware and East Carolina won’t be made up.

The Bulldogs (11-0), who defeated Marshall and NC State on Friday by a combined 25-0 score, will face No. 20 South Alabama at noon today.

UGA equestrian upsets No. 3 Auburn

For the first time since the 2011-12 season, the Georgia equestrian team defeated Auburn in regular season competition. The No. 7 Bulldogs posted an 11-8 victory Saturday over the No. 3 Tigers at the UGA Equestrian Complex in Oconee County.

With the victory, Georgia (8-3, 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference) can be seeded no less than a tie for first place in the SEC Championships.

The Bulldogs were led by Liza Finsness (equitation on the flat), Rachel Kolb (horsemanship) and McKenzie Lantz (reining), all of whom earned MOP honors.

Finsess defeated Auburn’s Chirstina Linn 87-85 in equitation on the flat, Kolb bested Lacy Watson 75.5-74 in horsemanship and Lenz garnered a 71-70 decision in reining.

Georgia will host New Mexico State on March 7, the Bulldogs’ last home meet of the season.

Women golfers return to action in New Orleans

The Georgia women’s golf team will return to action for the second time in as many weeks when the Bulldogs open play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship today at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, La.

Nine top-25 and four top-10 teams are featured in the 17-school field. No. 1 USC headlines the list of participating schools, which also includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Washington, No. 9 Alabama, No. 11 Clemson, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 18 Florida, No. 23 LSU and No. 24 Auburn.
