UGA offense still ‘scary’ despite so-so scrimmage

The offensive showing on Saturday wasn’t what Mike Bobo was looking for, but he said it will give him plenty to teach off the tape as Georgia wraps up the spring with two practices this week.

The Georgia offensive coordinator’s take on the starting unit was more critical than many of his players saw it after Saturday’s third and final spring scrimmage, won by defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s Black team over the Red 23-17.

One down day in the first week of April didn’t diminish the big picture view for wide receiver Rhett McGowan.

“What’s scary about us is we get everybody back, we’re a balanced team,” McGowan said. “We’ve got great running backs, great depth at receiver, the best quarterback in the country and a good offensive line. I just think there’s no gaps in this offense. Definitely room for improvement. We’re an experienced group and I think that will pay off.”

Bobo said Georgia has to do a better job of running the ball (his Red team had 23 yards on 29 carries) and calling more runs, but that the offense didn’t use much of its run package.

Georgia coach Mark Richt found something to nitpick about in the 75-yard touchdown drive before the half that he didn’t like. Before quarterback Aaron Murray completed three consecutive passes, he scrambled for a yard instead of throwing the ball away.

“I don’t want him to get exposed to that hit, I don’t want him to fumble the ball and I don’t want to call a timeout,” Richt said. “He’s got to make sure he handles the first play of the drive as good as he handled the first three plays of the drive.”
