UGA men’s tennis team sweeps Florida

The No. 5 Georgia men’s tennis team earned a key Southeastern Conference victory Friday with a 4-0 sweep of Florida at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs (11-4, 3-1 SEC) have won five consecutive matches over the Gators (7-6, 2-1) and are perfect 8-0 at home this season.

After claiming the doubles point, Georgia took care of the Gators in short order as Ben Wagland defeated Stephane Piro 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Austin Smith bested Michael Alford 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 and Garrett Brasseaux topped Luke Johnson 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6.

Matches at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 were then suspended, with Georgia winning first sets on two of those courts.

“I’m really happy with the way we played,” said UGA coach Manuel Diaz in a university release. “I’m really excited about our direction, and we control our own destiny in the conference race. We have to be ready to play each match. Our guys are really playing well, and we’re coming together as a team.”

The Bulldogs will host South Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday.
