Georgia’s football team tied for the third best Academic Progress Rate score in the Southeastern Conference, according to data released Wednesday by the NCAA.
The team scored 970, which tied Alabama and trailed only Vanderbilt’s 978 andFlorida’s 972 among conference teams. The NCAA average for football is 948.
Georgia’s men’s basketball had a 960 APR, which ranked ninth in the SEC. That score was up 14 points from the previous year and the program’s best multi-year score dating back to 2004-05. The average in the sport nationally was 950.
This latest four-year APR covers the academic years from 2007-08 through 2010-11.
The men’s basketball APR was a perfect 1,000 score for the last academic year. Football scored 942 for the last academic year.
The APR measures the academic progress and retention of athletes on scholarship.
As reported last month by the Athens Banner-Herald, noGeorgiateam was in danger of scoring below 930 out of 1000, the cutoff to be subject to penalties such as a loss of scholarships and practice time. Those falling below a four-year score of 900 or a two-year score of 930 face a postseason ban.
The women’s basketball team (970) and baseball (955) teams ranked eighth in the SEC in their sports. The women’s basketball team was tied withMississippiState.
Georgia’s men’s golf, gymnastics, women’s swimming and men’s indoor track had the top APR in their sports in the SEC.
“Our student-athletes are to be congratulated for their effort and hard work in generating these APR scores,” Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said in a statement. “It’s an outstanding example of teamwork among our student-athletes, coaches and Ted White’s staff at the Rankin Smith Center. We are very proud of this combined effort of excellence in academics, and we look forward to continued improvement in the future.”
Georgia’s gymnastics and men’s golf teams each scored 1,000. They were given NCAA Public Recognition awards last week for being in the top 10 percent in the latest multi-year APR scores. Men’s golf was recognized for the third straight year.

The Division I APR is 973, a bump of three points from a year ago. The average four-year rate is up in football, men’s basketball and baseball.
