Three UGA swimmers earn conference honors

Georgia swimmers Doug Reynolds, Melanie Margalis and Olivia Smoliga have garnered Southeastern Conference weekly awards, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Reynolds was named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Week, Margalis was picked as the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week, and Smoliga was tabbed as the SEC Female Freshman of the Week. For Margalis and Smoliga, it is their second such distinction this season.

In Georgia’s win over Emory at Gabrielsen Natatorium, Reynolds won two individual races and was on a victorious relay. The senior from Loganville claimed the 100 freestyle in 45.51 and the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.30. Reynolds swam the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay that had a top time of 1:23.01.

Margalis also won two individual races and was on a victorious relay against Emory. The senior from Clearwater, Fla., won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.24 and the 200 butterfly in 1:58.84. Margalis swam the breaststroke portion of the 400 medley relay that stopped the clock in 3:46.20.

Smoliga, a freshman from Glenview, Ill., won one individual race and was on a victorious relay. She took the 200 backstroke with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:58.75. She swam the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay that finished first in 1:34.11. She also placed second on the 400 medley relay as she swam the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay that finished in 3:46.97.

Margalis and Smoliga helped the Lady Bulldogs extend their all-sports UGA record to 86 straight victories at home.

Georgia’s teams will compete in the Auburn Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday.

Georgia, Samford to play in ’17

Georgia has added a home game for the 2017 season against Samford, according to a  memorandum of understanding obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald in an open records request. Full Story
