Three Georgia women’s tennis players advanced to the regional finals of the 2013 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase will represent Georgia in the doubles final, while Silvia Garcia will represent the Bulldogs in the singles championship.
Georgia began the day with No. 50 Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase advancing to the doubles region finals. The Bulldog tandem beat Florida’s Kourtney Kegan and Belinda Woolcock 8-6, capitalizing on a late break. They will square off with Georgia Tech’s Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey today for a bid to the National Indoor Championships in New York in November,
In singles, No. 60 Garcia clinched a spot in today’s final. She beat Georgia State’s No. 37 Abigail Tere-Apisah, 7-5, 7-6(4) and then bested No. 16 Sofie Oyen, 6-4, 6-4. Garcia will square off with Florida’s Alexandra Cercone today with the winner earning an automatic bid into next month’s National Indoor Championships in New York. Also on Sunday, No. 14 Maho Kowase beat Miami’s No. 52 Stephanie Wagner before falling short to No. 38 Cercone, 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals.
The event is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
