Offensive lineman John Theus was back practicing Thursday for the first time this spring, but he didn’t return to the starting right tackle spot that he occupied every game for Georgia last season as a freshman.
Not right away.
Theus said he worked mainly as the second team right tackle on his return to practice as he tried to get acclimated again.
Theus had surgery on his right foot on Jan .23 to repair a broken bone.
Players said that Xzavier Ward worked as the first team right tackle and Kenarious Gates shifted back to left tackle while getting some right tackle work as well.
“Spring’s about rotating guys in and seeing who fits with who,” quarterback Aaron Murray said. “Especially the offensive line. They obviously like to get a set guy in there. With Theus out and Chris (Burnette) out early in spring, just trying some new guys out, trying like KG at right tackle. It’s just the time when you want to experiment and that’s what’s going on right now.”
Returning in the middle of spring practice made Theus feel “a little bit behind,” but he was glad to be get back in the mix.
“It felt good to be back out there,” Theus said. “No limping. Definitely the recovery went well. I’m back out there now and just trying to get back in the swing of things.”
