The dwindling number of scholarship players at Florida under first-year coach Will Muschamp was the subject of a story in The Gainesville Sun last week by Robbie Andreu.
The Gators were down to 73.
Some bloggers like Senator Blutarsky at Get The Picture have noted Georgia is making a run at that.
By my count, that number for the Bulldogs is now at 77. That’s the number of players on scholarship at Georgia, not including walk-ons awarded scholarships. The NCAA permits a program to have 85 players on scholarship.
Attrition after a 6-7 season has included players transferring out (Nick Williams, Logan Gray, A.J. Harmon, Brent Benedict), parting ways with the program (Washaun Ealey, Marcus Dowtin) or just giving up playing after dealing with injuries (Tanner Strickland did not return for senior season and Jeremy Longo took medical disqualification).
That number could drop even more if cornerback signee Devin Bowman from Ridgeland doesn’t qualify academically. He still has to pass an English portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test.
The Bulldogs’ number includes offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who is out after his third ACL tear. He’s one of 14 scholarship seniors on the roster.
