Southern Conference teams playing with big boys

Georgia’s next opponent, Georgia Southern (8-2), is ranked sixth in both the FCS coaches and Sports Network polls. It is the highest ranked Southern Conference team.

Four teams from the Southern Conference are playing SEC teams this week.

Western Carolina is at Alabama, Wofford travels in-state to play South Carolina and Samford plays at Kentucky.

The league is 0-6 against FBS opponents this season, but Richt this week brought up Appalachian State’s upset of Michigan in 2007.

“On my official visit, there were a bunch of pictures,” said Georgia linebacker A.J. McDonald, who signed with Appalachian State out of Peachtree Ridge, redshirted and transferred to Georgia looking for a better fit.

That’s the last time a team from the league beat an FBS team.

McDonald was on the scout team simulating Georgia Southern in 2010 and again this year.

“They cut in the triple-option like Georgia Tech,” McDonald said. “It will be good practice for Georgia Tech, I guess.”
