Redshirt junior tailback Carlton Thomas won’t play in the season opener against Boise State in the Georgia Dome on Sept. 3, Georgia coach Mark Richt confirmed.
“Carlton Thomas will not be able to play in that ballgame from a suspension issue,” Richt said in audio from an interview posted Wednesday by Bronco Nation News.
Georgia would not confirm earlier this week that Thomas would miss the game.
Richt did not say in the interview what Thomas did to get suspended or if he would be available for the South Carolina game the next week.
The Bulldogs will have freshman Isaiah Crowell, redshirt freshman Ken Malcome and junior Richard Samuel at tailback. Samuel moved last week back to the position from linebacker after Caleb King was declared academically ineligible.
“I have no idea what that thing is going to look like by the time we get there,” Richt said.
Richt said that a fullback would train at tailback in case another was needed. Zander Ogletree did that some last season.
