Blog: Rewarding month for walk-ons

August is turning out to be a rewarding month for Georgia walk-on football players.

The school announced Sunday night that seven are getting put on scholarship. Last August, eight walk-ons were in the fortunate group.

Tailback Brandon Harton and cornerback Blake Sailors had their scholarships renewed again.

The players awarded scholarships for the first time: defensive back Luis Capella, fullback Merritt Hall, receiver Rhett McGowan, safety Connor Norman and linebacker Kosta Vavlas.

Hall is holding down Georgia’s No. 1 fullback spot. Norman is a candidate to start at safety if Bacarri Rambo is suspended as expected.

For those wondering, I’m told by Georgia that, yes,  snapper Ty Frix and linebacker Reuben Faloughi still remain on scholarship. Frix has been on scholarship since May 2010. Faloughi was put on scholarship at the end of spring practice in 2010.

Georgia has room for walk-ons to be awarded with scholarships because only 69 players that were recruited on scholarship are on the roster. The NCAA allows a maximum of 85 players on scholarship.
