Quick hits: Mason is top backup QB; injuries minimal in scrimmage

Huston Mason completed 8 of 18 passes for 67 yards with a touchdown and interception Wednesday. Christian Lemay was 2 of 5 for 35 yards with an interception. Mason, who coaches would like to redshirt, is likely to get the call if there’s an injury to Murray. Even if it’s deep into the season. “By the grace of God, we’re 8-0 and something happened to Murray, (Mason) may be the starter,” Richt said.

…Richt said he didn’t think any injuries from the scrimmage would keep a player out of practice today. Tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith (strained hamstring) did not scrimmage.

…Linebacker Chase Vasser led the defense with six tackles and three sacks. Freshman defensive back Josh Harvey-Clemons had four tackles, a sack and an interception.

…Georgia is ranked No. 9 in Sports Illustrated’s preseason rankings. That’s two spots behind SEC East rival South Carolina. Alabama is No. 1.

… Georgia will hold one more scrimmage next week, but it will be a “practice game” format to prepare for the Sept. 1 opener against Buffalo.
