Blog: ‘Positive vibes’ flow from Coach Red Bull

The sports drink Powerade is the official beverage of choice around the Georgia football program.

Coach Mark Richt has a cup placed before him on hot days at his postpractice news conference.

New inside linebackers coach Mike Ekeler is partial to an energy drink that can apparently be found in large quantities in his Butts-Mehre coaching office.

That would be Red Bull.

“He’s a high-energy coach, a high-energy person,” Richt said at the UGA Day event Tuesday night in Gainesville

Richt said he makes sure to drop by Ekeler’s office once a day “just to get some positive vibes, you know. Sometimes (Mike) Bobo and (Jeremy) Pruitt, they’re down about something. Ekeler, hopefully it’s not against NCAA rules, but he’s got a refrigerator, he’s got a lifelong deal with Red Bull. He’s got a Red Bull refrigerator. They send him cases of Red Bull whenever he asks for it. I think something happened at Nebraska. They called him Coach Red Bull and they gave him a lifetime supply.”

The Lincoln Journal Star noted in a 2008 story that linebacker Tyler Wortman said that Ekeler’s office fridge was indeed stocked with Red Bull and a story two years later referred to that Coach Red Bull name.

Remember the ‘Energy Bus’ theme from a couple of years back for Georgia? Ekeler is providing plenty of energy for the team all by himself now.
