The No. 13 Georgia softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Georgia State in the final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday.
Chelsea Wilkinson suffered the loss for the Bulldogs to fall to 24-6 on the year. She allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on 10 hits and three walks. She also struck out seven batters. Kaitlyn Medlam secured the victory to improve to 17-10 on the year. She allowed one hit in four scoreless innings of relief. Eron Milton got the start for the Panthers, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in three innings of work.
The Bulldogs were led offensively Tina Iosefa and Katie Browne, who scored both of Georgia’s run on solo home runs.
Georgia (38-10) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Iosefa hit the first home run of the game and the seventh of her season when she took the first pitch of the inning deep over the left center field wall. With one away, Browne fell behind in the count 0-2, but belted a towering home run over the left field wall that made it a 2-0 game. It was Browne’s seventh home run of the season and the fourth in the last eight games.
The Panthers cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning. A pair of singles and a throwing error allowed Georgia State to put a runner at third. With one away, a RBI single by Lauren Coleman scored the run that made it a 2-1 game. Wilkinson induced a double play ball that ended the inning.
The offenses were quiet over the next two innings. Georgia State took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. With a runner on and one out, Mandy Blackwell hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field.
Georgia State added a run in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 4-2 game. With two outs, Coleman walked and then came home on a double down the left field line and Georgia error.
Georgia steps back into Southeastern Conference play when it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on No. 7 Alabama. Thursday’s game is set to begin at 8 p.m.
