Scott Lakatos might be about to set a record for most time coaching against Buffalo at different schools.
He will be on the opposing side of a game against the Bulls for the 11th time with a fourth different program on Saturday.
Lakatos, who coached only in the Northeast before he was hired to coach Georgia’s secondary in 2010, faced Buffalo four times while on staff at Maine from 1995-98, three times at Rutgers in 2001-03 and three times at Connecticut in the 2004, 2005, and 2008 seasons.
Lakatos knew he coached against Buffalo numerous times, but he couldn’t pin down the number.
“I was trying to think about that myself,” he said.
The last time Lakatos went up against Buffalo was on Jan. 3, 2009 in the International Bowl in Toronto. Connecticut won 38-20.
“Right in the Blue Jays stadium,” Lakatos said. “Thank goodness it was inside because it was cold. We were there on New Year’s Eve and I took the kids outside and we were out there for about 20 minutes. It was cold. Cold. And it was all about the MAC. That was a MAC-friendly bowl. They were really disappointed that the MAC champion got beat by UConn.”
The personnel and coaching staff now is different at Buffalo.
“It’s totally different,” Lakatos said. “The only thing I know is the Anchor Bar where the Buffalo wing is invented.”
I’m not much of a wings guy so I took his word for it.
“That’s the first Buffalo wing in the United States, the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, N.Y. Look that up. Google it.”
OK. I did. Sure, enough, it’s right there on their Website.
Good thing to know in case Georgia makes a return trip to Buffalo one day. Of course, that’s not happening. Maybe a road trip to see a Sabres game?
