No. 6 Gym Dogs stumble at No. 3 Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The No. 6 Georgia gymnastics team led No. 3 Florida after each of the first three rotations, but couldn’t hold on as the Gators rallied to win, 198.050-196.700 in front of 10,013 fans at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on Friday.

The Gym Dogs held a narrow .075 lead going to beam while Florida was on floor, but the Gators scored a 49.875 in the final rotation behind back-to-back perfect 10.0s by Bridget Sloan and Kytra Hunter. Georgia was forced to count a fall on beam and scored a 48.450.

“We are going to learn from this, and we are going to be better,” Georgia coach Danna Durante said in a release. “We had a very strong second half of the beam lineup, and we have to get the freshmen stronger. They’ve shown they have the ability to be very solid; we just need some more work.”

Georgia began the meet with a 49.600 on bars – its highest mark since 1999. Lindsey Cheek placed first with a career-high 9.975, followed by a pair of 9.95s by Brittany Rogers and Chelsea Davis. After one rotation the Gym Dogs led 49.600-49.350.

“It showed why we are ranked as high on bars as we are,” Durante said. “Nine times out of 10 they are sticking those landings. I’m very proud of the start we had.”

The Gym Dogs maintained their lead in the second rotation with a 49.300 on vault, while the Gators turned in a 49.450 on bars. At the halfway point, Georgia led 98.900-98.800. Cheek registered a 9.925 to tie for first on vault, while Rogers added a 9.9 as the anchor.

In the third rotation, Georgia scored a 49.375 on floor and led 148.250-148.175. Mary Beth Box tied her career-high with a 9.9, and Brandie Jay also turned in a 9.9 in the No. 6 spot.

On beam, Kaylan Earls tied her career-high with a 9.95 to tie for first. Rogers scored a 39.525 in the all-around, and the Gators’ Hunter and Sloan tied for first with a 39.700

Georgia will be back in action Saturday again Kentucky at 4 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
