No. 15 South Carolina pummels Georgia

Jordan Montgomery carried a no-hitter to the seventh to pace No. 15 South Carolina to a 7-1 win over Georgia on Saturday at Carolina Stadium.

The Gamecocks (36-14, 15-10 Southeastern Conference) struck first following a two-out walk to Max Schrock in the second.

Connor Bright followed with a run-scoring double down the left field line to put them ahead 1-0.

In the fourth, shortstop Joey Pankake smashed a leadoff triple over the head of DJ Smith in centerfield.

Bulldog left-hander Blake Dieterich came back to strike out LB Dantzler on three pitches but then Grayson Greiner made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. USC scored three two-out runs in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead and chase Dieterich. In the sixth, Dantzler drew a leadoff walk from Patrick Boling, took third on a double by Greiner and scored on a sacrifice fly by Schrock to make it 6-0.

Georgia (18-30, 5-18 SEC) got leadoff walks in the third and fourth innings and a leadoff error by Schrock in the sixth but came up empty.

The Bulldogs were held hitless until one out in the seventh when senior shortstop Kyle Farmer blasted a triple to the gap in left centerfield. It was his second of the year and seventh for his career. Then, sophomore first baseman Jared Walsh got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly that made it 6-1. Georgia’s second hit of the day came in the seventh when senior catcher Brett DeLoach delivered a double to centerfield.

Montgomery (4-1) allowed one run on two hits in seven innings with three walks and two strikeouts to pick up a victory. Dieterich fell to 2-3, surrendering five runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.

Right-hander Colby Homes pitched the last two innings for the Gamecocks while Boling took care of the final 3.1 innings for the Bulldogs.

Georgia senior third baseman Curt Powell saw his eight-game hitting streak end after going 0-for-4. Farmer finished with two of Georgia’s three hits on the afternoon.
