TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | The No. 13 Georgia softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 7 Alabama on Thursday.
Georgia‚Äôs Alex Hugo provided the runs for the Bulldogs on a two-run home run in the fifth. It was Hugo‚Äôs 20th home run of the year. Samantha LaZear was productive from the plate, going 2-for-3, while Paige Wilson singled and scored a run for the Bulldogs.
Chelsea Wilkinson got the loss to fall to 24-7 on the year. She allowed four runs on eight hits in the complete-game performance. Jaclyn Traina picked up the win to move to 18-2 on the year. She allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eight batters.
Alabama took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by Jadyn Spencer that scored Haylie McCleney, who led off the inning with an infield single. The second run came home on a sacrifice fly in foul territory by Leona Lafaele.
Georgia (38-11, 11-8 SEC) got a pair of two out singles in the top of the second, but couldn‚Äôt push a run across as the runners were left stranded.
The Crimson Tide (41-8, 16-3 SEC) plated a run in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings to extend its lead to 4-0. An RBI single up the middle Molly Fichtner plated the run in the third, before a solo home run by Peyton Grantham led off the bottom of the fourth that made it a 4-0 game.
The Bulldogs got two runs back to cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning. A single by LaZear and a fielder‚Äôs choice by Wilson put a runner on for Hugo. Hugo then hit an opposite field home run to right center that made it a 4-2 game.
Wilkinson did her part to keep the Bulldogs in the game by not allowing a run in the final two innings in the circle, but Georgia was unable to plate another run allowing Alabama to take the win.
Georgia looks to even the series with Alabama at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
