The father of Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray underwent surgery Monday for thyroid cancer.
Dennis Murray’s surgery in Tampa“went well,” Aaron’s sister, Stephanie, tweeted Monday afternoon.
Before the surgery, Aaron Murray posted on his Twitter account that his father “is the strongest man I know. This morning is the first step to recovery. Praying God looks over him and the surgeons.”
Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was asked about the surgery Monday night on the “Bulldog Hotline” radio show.
“I don’t want to go too much into detail because it’s a personal matter between him and his family, but he said everything went well and they’re going just to have to wait a few weeks to see if they got everything,” Bobo said. “I know he’ll appreciate all the prayers out there from everybody for him and his family.”
Aaron Murray has said that his father instilled in him a work ethic that has been credited for much of the quarterback’s success at Georgia.Murray studies hours upon hours of gamefilm to prepare for games.
Dennis Murray is a civil engineer who was a minor league pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
“He’s is probably the hardest worker I know,” Aaron Murray said in 2010. “He puts everybody in the family above himself. On holidays, all he asks for are socks and underwear, socks and underwear. He worked extra to make sure that we had the life that we wanted and always had what we wanted, whether for sports of school. He always was working extra, working the weekends.”
His father’s surgery followed Georgia’s 35-7 loss Saturday night at South Carolina.
“Probably the worst 12 hours of my life, but I know my family will push through,” Aaron Murray tweeted Sunday.
