The sixth-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team improved to 6-0 after posting a 7-0 victory over Florida International on Sunday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.
The Bulldogs captured the doubles point and then won all six singles matches to shut out the Panthers (1-5) for the second time in as many weeks. Last Saturday, Georgia blanked FIU during an ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament in Athens to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
In doubles, Georgia set a dominating pace as the second-ranked team of Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist blanked Rita Maisak and Sarah McLean 8-0. Moments later, the first team point was clinched when Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase registered an 8-1 at No. 3 over Nina Djordjevic and Lisa Johnson. The Bulldogs capped the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 2 from Lauren Herring and Kate Fuller over Giuletta Boha and Karyn Guttormsen.
In singles, Gullickson made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over McLean at No. 1.
Gilchrist secured a straight-set win at No. 3 over Johnson to put Georgia in front 3-0. The Bulldogs clinched the win after Kowase defeated Boha 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. Sophomore Alina Jerjomina picked up a win at No. 6, defeating Djordjevic 6-1, 6-1 to make it 5-0 Bulldogs. In lieu of a third set in the No. 2 contest between Herring and Maisak, a super tiebreaker was played. Herring prevailed 10-6 for a 6-0 Bulldog advantage. Fuller completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Guttormsen.
