Blog: Italy a hot spot for Georgia players

Who says big-time college football is all consuming for players these days?

Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson, tight end Arthur Lynch and snapper Ty Frix are spending nearly four weeks on a study abroad trip to Italy before returning for summer workouts in Athens.

“We just ran up the biggest mountain in Cortona,” Robinson tweeted today. “Don’t worry coach we’re working!”

Robinson is blogging the trip at http://christianrobinson.wordpress.com/

Their trip runs from May 10 to June 5. I’m told they will be traveling around northern Italy taking classes.

Two months later, Georgia’s men’s basketball team will make their own trip to Italy to play professional teams.

Coach Mark Fox said the ‚Äúhope is to play three games. If we can work in a fourth–great. The hard part is going to be it‚Äôs an Olympic year. The gold medal game is Aug. 12. We‚Äôre going right during the Olympics, but that‚Äôs the only window we have because we start school so early.‚Äù

Fox said the Olympics will mean some of the Italian pro players will be with Olympic teams.

Georgia’s trip will offer extra practice time before the trip and then the time in Italy for a team that is adding four freshmen signees to the roster.

“We knew we were going to have four guys coming in here so the timing works out great from that regard,” Fox said.
