JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–Mike Bobo has been at Georgia every step of the way with coach Mark Richt.
The Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator drew interest from Virginia Tech last offseason about a similar position, but stayed put and got a big raise.
So the question posed to Richt this past summer: How much longer do you think you’re going to have Bobo around?
“Oh, I don’t know,” Richt said. “I think he likes it here. I think he understands being a head coach is a lot different than being a coordinator.”
Eventually, the 39-year old Bobo figures to become a head coach. He guided Georgia’s record-setting offense last year and the Bulldogs are on pace to top those marks this year despite all the injuries.
Bruce Feldman of CBS tweeted tonight that Bobo is expected to speak to Georgia Southern about it head coaching vacancy after the Gator Bowl. Georgia couldn’t confirm that, but DawgPost.com reported Bobo declined to discuss the Georgia Southern opening, but cited a source saying Bobo had talked with athletic director Tom Kleinlein about the job.
Georgia Southern is moving up to the Sun Belt Conference and it’s expected to have a more competitive salary for its head coach. Bobo makes $575,000 a year under a three-year contract.
Bobo, the former Georgia quarterback, recruits South Georgia for the Bulldogs as well as coaching the quarterbacks and calling plays.
“To be the head coach and be the coordinator as well, it’s very difficult to do it all and do it as well,” Richt said in the summer. “Right now, he’s really, really good at what he does, but if he became the head coach, too and he wants to keep being what he is, something may give somewhere along the way. …He loves coaching so much, it may be hard for him to do that.”
Interviewing elsewhere could lead to another boost in salary, if not taking over a program of his own.
Richt was reminded earlier this month that his coaches on his offense got raises last offseason.
“Hey, if you do a good job,” he said, “maybe it will happen again.”
