Gym Dogs’ Rogers named SEC Freshman of the Week

Georgia collected its second consecutive league award as the Southeastern Conference named the Gym Dogs’ Brittany Rogers its Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.

Rogers set career highs on two events and tied a career high in another in Georgia’s 196.775 performance at the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday. Last week, Georgia’s Brandie Jay was the league’s freshman of the week.

“It has definitely been a goal of mine to become freshman of the week,” Rogers said before Tuesday’s practice. “I hope I can keep it up. I don’t know if I can do freshman of the week again but hopefully I can keep it up and it means a lot. Back-to-back from the same team, that is pretty sweet if you ask me.”

Rogers scored a 9.9 on vault and on uneven parallel bars. She also had a 9.825 on balance beam.

“It’s very exciting, and I think it’s a great honor to get back-to-back like that,” Georgia coach Danna Durante said. “To see them honored that way I think is motiving to them and it’s exciting for us.”

Rogers is from Coquitlam, British Columbia, and competed for Canada in the 2012 London Olympics. This is the first time Georgia has had back-to-back SEC freshman-of-the-week honors since Feb. 9 and Feb. 16, 2010, when Shayla Worley repeated on consecutive weeks.
