Gym Dogs finish fourth at Metroplex Challenge

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The ninth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team placed fourth with a 196.775 in the Metroplex Challenge Saturday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

No. 2 Oklahoma won the meet with a 197.275, followed by No. 7 LSU (197.100), No. 16 Oregon State (196.825), Georgia (196.775) and Washington (194.875).

Chelsea Davis, competing in her home state, tied for first on bars with a 9.95, and Brittany Rogers scored career highs on three events to lead the Gym Dogs (4-4). Rogers tied for first with a 9.9 on vault.

“Did we want to come out in fourth? No, but I thought we did a great job,” Georgia coach Danna Durante said in a news release. “It was a good road score In front of a big crowd. There are definitely things we need to work on, but we had a good meet. It was also great for Christa, Chelsea and Kati [Breazeal] to compete here in the state of Texas.”

Georgia opened with a 49.075 on beam led by three 9.825s by Shayla Worley, Kaylan Earls and Rogers. LSU led after the first rotation with a 49.45 on bars, while Oklahoma scored a 49.225 on vault.

The Gym Dogs turned in another 49.075 in the second rotation on floor. Christa Tanella scored a career-high 9.9, while Worley added a 9.875 in the anchor.

Georgia posted a 49.2 on vault in the third rotation. Rogers tied her season high with a 9.9, and Brandie Jay closed the rotation with a 9.875. The Gym Dogs went to the bye after vault with a 147.35 total.

Georgia closed the meet with its highest score of the night — a 49.425 on bars. Davis tied her career high in the anchor, while Lindsey Cheek added a 9.875. It was the first meet this season in which Georgia posted a 49.0 or higher in all four events.

Georgia will return home to face Alabama at 4 p.m. Saturday. The meet will serve as the annual Alumni Day, and numerous former Gym Dogs will be recognized prior to the meet.
