Gym Dogs Earls gets specialist honor

Georgia had a gymnast win a Southeastern Conference honor for the third straight time as Kaylan Earls was named SEC Specialist of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Earls scored a career-high 9.95 on balance beam and 9.875 on floor exercise to help the Gym Dogs to 197.5 points in a win against Alabama on Saturday. Georgia’s 197.5 is the second-highest team score in the nation so far.

Georgia’s Brandie Jay and Brittany Rogers were named SEC Freshmen of the Week for Jan. 23 and 29 respectively. Earls’ honor gives the Gym Dogs a conference superlative for the third straight week. Earls also continued Georgia’s harvest of SEC weekly honors. On Monday the SEC announced Khaalidah Miller and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as the women’s and men’s basketball players of the week.

Earls, a junior from Chicago, Ill., has been in the beam and floor lineup for every meet this season. Her 9.95 is tied for the team’s season high on beam and she has a 9.9 on floor which also ties the team’s season high.
