Blog: Georgia spring scrimmage No. 2 (with stats and video of Murray and Harvey-Clemons)

On a day quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Hutson Mason each passed for more than 150 yards, players said the offense got the best of the defense in Georgia’s second spring scrimmage on Saturday at Sanford Stadium.

“It was a lot of fun offensively today,” Murray said. “I think we scored every possession. The ones scored I think every possession either a field goal or a touchdown.”

Georgia coach Mark Richt liked what he saw on both sides of the ball.

“I thought the scrimmage was outstanding. I thought the guys really had fun today,” he said. “I thought they competed well. I think we’re still a little bit undisciplined with a little extracurricular activitiy after a couple of plays. Things get heated up and guys get after it a little bit after the whistle blows. I’d rather have them a heartbeat than try to get them to go.”

Cornerback Sheldon Dawson had an interception, giving him three in the two scrimmages, but he may be done for the spring after pulling a hamstring.

Chris Conley had six catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Freshmen inside linebacker Reggie Carter had five tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Freshman cornerback Reggie Wilkerson also had an interception. That gives Carter and Wilkerson an interception in each of the scrimmages.

“Our ones and twos, it seems like there’s less of a discrepancy between the groups,” Richt said. “Sometimes your ones are just so much better than your twos, but when our twos are playing ball, there’s a lot of good ball players out there so I’m encouraged by that, too.”

Richt confirmed that sophomore Josh Harvey-Clemons is working as the starting strong safety. Harvey-Clemons plays the star role covering the slot receiver in the nickel package.

Here is Harvey-Clemons explaining his role on the defense:
