Georgia-Mercer on tap for upcoming season

Georgia’s nonconference men’s basketball schedule for next season has another attractive matchup.

It will certainly be in the Peach State.

Mercer, coming off a trip to the NCAA tournament that included an upset of Duke, will visit Stegeman Coliseum on Dec. 27. The schools have a one-game contract in which Georgia will pay Mercer $90,000 for the visit, according to an open records request by the Athens Banner-Herald.

Georgia coach Mark Fox said in March that he and Mercer coach Bob Hoffman “have a great friendship.”

Fox said it was a possibility the teams would play again if they could find a date on the schedule that fit.

Mercer, located in Macon, is coming off a 27-9 season that ended in an 83-63 NCAA round of 32 loss to Tennessee. The Bears had a seven-member senior class that’s departed.

Georgia, coming off a 20-14 season, leads the all-time series 54-23. Fox is 3-0 at Georgia against Mercer, including a 58-49 win on Dec. 18, 2012.

Georgia’s nonconference schedule also includes home games against Colorado and Seton Hall and road games at Kansas State and Georgia Tech as well as playing in the preseason NIT.
