Blog: Georgia men picked to finish 11th in SEC hoops

Georgia is projected to finish deep down the Southeastern Conference men’s basketball standings this season, according to a preseason media poll released today as the league holds its media days in Birmingham.

The Bulldogs were picked to finish 11th in the 14-team conference, ahead of just South Carolina, Mississippi State and Auburn.
Kentucky is the favorite to win the conference, followed by Florida and Tennessee. Wildcats freshman Julius Randle was picked as the preseason Player of the Year.

Georgia is coming off consecutive 15-17 seasons and lost SEC Player of the Year Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, an NBA lottery pick.

“The strength in our team will probably lie in our depth and versatility,” forward Marcus Thornton said last week. “That’s where I think we’ll be able to take advantage and win some matchups.”

The Bulldogs finished 9-9 in league play last season.

Georgia returns forward Nemanja Djruisic, guards Charles Mann and Kenny Gaines and forwards Donte’ Williams and Brandon Morris.

“This group functions so much more maturely than we have in the last couple of years,” said fifth-year coach Mark Fox. “And we finally have maturing players at every position, which has made a difference already because we can put an experienced group together.”
