Blog: Georgia loses LB Burrows for season

Brandon Burrows will have to wait another year to play for Georgia, thinning the depth for the Bulldogs at inside linebacker.

The redshirt freshman will undergo right shoulder surgery on Tuesday and will miss the 2011 season, the school confirmed Thursday morning.

Georgia coach Mark Richt had said that the Walton High product was in position to compete for playing time and contribute on special teams. He had two tackles and a sack in the spring game.

With Richard Samuel now at tailback, Georgia’s top reserve behind Christian Robinson and Alec Ogletree at inside linebacker is Mike Gilliard. Marcus Dowtin and Nick Williams transferred after last season.

Freshmen Amarlo Herrera, Ramik Wilson and Kent Turene will have a chance to factor in as well. Turene is awaiting certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse, something that Richt said earlier this week was “up in the air.”

‚ÄúSomebody‚Äôs going to have to step up,‚Äù Robinson said Wednesday. ‚ÄúWe do have guys, maybe guys people haven’t seen. It all comes down to getting prepared.‚Äù

Georgia said Burrows’ surgery will address “chronic shoulder instability.” Director of sports medicine Ron Corson said a full return is expected following rehabilitation.
