Blog: Georgia beefs up strength staff with former LB Gilbert

Georgia is beefing up its football strength and conditioning staff with the addition of former Bulldogs linebacker Tony Gilbert to a full-time position.

New strength and conditioning director Joe Tereshinski said after he moved into the position that he expected Gilbert would join the staff as a student assistant, but senior associate athletic director Claude Felton said this afternoon that Gilbert fills a newly added spot on the strength staff as an assistant coach.

That gives the Bulldogs five full-time strength staff members including Tereshinski, associate director Keith Gray and assistant directors Rex Bradberry and Thomas Brown.

Gray and Bradberry were on staff under longtime director Dave Van Halanger, who now has an administrative role on the football staff. Brown is a former Georgia running back.

Former Vince Dooley strength coach John Kasay also is an assistant director, but his position is considered part-time.

Van Halanger’s staff included three assistants.

Gilbert, a Macon native, was the defensive captain on the Bulldogs’ 2002 SEC championship team, accounting for 114 tackles that season and earning second-team All-SEC honors. Gilbert played in the NFL for Jacksonville and Atlanta. He earned his degree from Georgia in May.

In a statement, coach Mark Richt, who is on a mission trip this week to Honduras, said: “I’m thrilled to have Tony as part of our strength staff and program. His experience as a member of a UGA SEC championship team and an NFL player is a perfect combination for us. Our players will benefit greatly from his knowledge.”

Gilbert said: “I’m very excited and thankful for the opportunity to come back and be a member of the staff here at Georgia. This is where I played, went to school and graduated, so I consider it an honor to contribute once again to the program and to have an impact on young men’s lives. I’m really looking forward to it.”
