Georgia a heavy favorite against FAU

To call Georgia an overwhelming favorite for Saturday’s game against Florida Atlantic wouldn’t do enough justice.

The Bulldogs are favored by 43 points, the largest point spread for Georgia over a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent since Vince Dooley’s final season as coach, according to Brandon Pertner of Phil Steele Publications, which keeps records of point spreads dating back to 1988.

The closest spread to this week’s was the 40 ½ points that Georgia was favored over Cal State-Fullerton in 1991, a season before that program was disbanded. Georgia also was favored by 39 over Louisiana-Monroe in 2005.

If FCS programs are included, the largest spread was the 45 against Idaho State in 2010, 42 against Tennessee Tech in 2009 and 39 against Coastal Carolina in 2011.

FCS lines only have been considered “legit” since 2008, according to Pertner.

The blog Pre-Snap Read this week lists Florida Atlantic 122nd out of 124 FBS programs. It is ahead of only South Alabama and Massachusetts, two programs making the transition from the FCS.

“We have enough problems of our own that we don’t have to worry too much about Georgia,” Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini said Monday. “We’ve got to fix us and keep getting better. That’s what you get out of it.”
