Gemmell wins 10K title at U.S. Open Water Nationals

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. | Andrew Gemmell, a recent Georgia graduate, won the 10-kilometer title at the United States Open Water Nationals on Friday at Castaic Lake.

Gemmell, representing Nation’s Capital Swim Club, earned a spot on the United States’ 2014 Pan Pacific Championships and 2015 World Championships teams.

He finished Friday’s race with a time of 1 hour, 50 minutes and 45.93 seconds.

“I just did a lot of little things right, which adds up,” Gemmell said. “I just put my head down and went from there.”

Gemmell represented the United States in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the Olympics in 2012 and competed in open water in the 2009, 2011 and 2013 World Championships.
