Greetings from Sanford Stadium for yet another top-10 opponent for Georgia.
South Carolina was here three weeks ago. Today, as you might have heard, it’s No. 6 LSU.
Think there’s been enough hype for this game?
That’s what happens when ESPN’s College GameDay is here and CBS is about to show this thing to the nation at 3:30 p.m.
“These are the games you come to Georgia for, to play into these big-time games,” quarterback Aaron Murray said. “It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be a great crowd. Hopefully a lot better weather than it was (last) weekend.”
That’s certainly the case. As I sit here three hours before kickoff, it’s a perfect early fall afternoon. The forecast for kickoff is 75 and sunny, per weather.com
My favorite signs from Myers Quad on GameDay:
“Can we vote to reinstate Pollack?”—referencing LSU’s team vote to reinstate running back Jeremy Hill.
“Merritt Hall 4 Heisman”—Georgia’s backup fullback gets love in a game that also features Quayvon Hicks and J.C. Copeland.
Mark Richt showed up on set at about 10 a.m., appearing relaxed hours before a pivotal game for Georgia to stay alive in the BCS title chase.
“It’s huge game for us, to keep all of the momentum going, to keep all of our hopes and dreams alive, we’ve got to win it,” Murray said.
There, of course, is the whole Zach Mettenberger returning home storyline as well.
Murray and Mettenberger, who competed for the starting job in 2010, now are on different sidelines.
“I think they’re both kind of happy that it’s all worked out,” Georgia fifth-year senior tight end Arthur Lynch said. “There’s no hostility between the two. They just want what’s best. I think it makes for a pretty good ballgame about to happen Saturday.”
Some other notes:
–Not dressed today due to injury: receiver Jonathon Rumph (hamstring) and linebacker James DeLoach (concussion). Also not on dress list cornerback Devin Bowman.
A bunch of freshmen/junior college transfers who look headed for redshirts also aren’t on dress roster: Tramel Terry, Shaun McGee, Kennar Johnson, Brice Ramsey, Devin Bellamy, Uriah LeMay, DeAndre Johnson, Auden Bynum and John Atkins.
—-LSU’s defense has a bunch of new faces after an exodus to the NFL. Just like Georgia.
“Like any good SEC defense they reload and they reload fast,” Murray said.
“They play extremely hard, they play physical, they run to the ball, they’re good tacklers in space,” Richt said. “They’re just a typical John Chavis defense.”
–Safety Shaquille Fluker also isn’t dressed out in the Dawg Walk.
–Mettenberger seemed pretty business-like in pregame tosses. He stopped only to hug former roommate at Georgia, offensive lineman Dallas Lee, and Blake Sailors as Mettenberger headed back to the locker room.
Richt on Mettenberger’s future: “There’s a big ceiling on him still. There’s still a lot that he’ll grow and get better as this season goes on and there’s no doubt that he’ll play in the NFL for years to come as well.”
–Tight end Jay Rome (ankle) went through warm-ups with the tight ends and looks good to go.
–ESPN’s Lee Corso was watching pregame warmups on the LSU sideline. Lots of NFL scouts on hand as well watching on the field: Jaguars, Falcons, Jets among them.
