Former UGA track star Torrin Lawrence killed in wreck near Cordele

Former University of Georgia and Team USA track and field standout Torrin Lawrence was killed early Monday when a tractor trailer hit his car on Interstate 75 near Cordele, the school has confirmed. He was 25.

The accident occurred when Lawrence’s car blew a tire and came to a stop in a southbound lane near exit 94, according to a WALB-TV report citing Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock. WALB reports that Lawrence’s car was then struck by the truck, throwing him from the vehiclee and killing him. However, Hancock told an NBC OlympicTalk reporter, “We’re not exactly sure where he was in relation to the car.”

Lawrence was a seven-time All-American and three-time Southeastern Conference champion who won the NCAA 400-meter championship in 2010. More recently, Lawrence earned a gold medal as a member of the U.S.’s 4×400 relay team at the IAAF World Relays in May.
