Former Bulldogs track standout Fountain, Athens Christian alum Higgs fall short of podium

Former Georgia athlete and defending Olympic silver medalist Hyleas Fountain could not make the starting line for the final event, the 800-meter run, and did not place in the heptathlon on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in London, England.

Fountain sat in fifth overall after the first day of the heptathlon with 3,900 points, just three points out of third place on Friday. Fountain started Saturday by scoring 865 points in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 10 1/4 inches. In Saturday’s second event, Fountain threw the javelin a distance of 70-10 3/8 to score 865 points. Great Britain’s Jessica Ennis won the gold medal with 6,955 points.

Former Athens Christian standout Raymond Higgs finished ninth in his group and did not qualify for long jump finals. Higgs only made one official jump and it went 25-5 1/2. Higgs is originally from the Bahamas and competes collegiately at Arkansas.
