Blog: Washington, Commings, Smith also returning; Mason staying at Georgia

Update:  No major news out of the media availability. Cornelius Washington, Sanders Commings and Branden Smith said they were returning for their senior seasons as well. That means the only underclassmen leaving is tight end Orson Charles.

“I’m as thrilled as I can be,” coach Mark Richt said with 14 returning players standing behind him.

Said Washington: “We want to do something big next year.”

Quarterback Hutson Mason is remaining at Georgia instead of transferring. The plan is for him to redshirt to give him class separation from Aaron Murray.

Georgia is making coach Mark Richt and “several rising senior football players” available to the media today at 3 p.m.

Safeties Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams have already said they are returning for their senior seasons instead of entering the NFL draft.

Cornerback Sanders Commings said Thursday night that he would be announcing his decision today, but didn’t want to reveal it yet.

“We’re having a little press conference that I’m going to announce it at,” Commings said. “I think there may be others there.”

Williams already said that “everybody will be back,” on defense among the underclassmen, but Commings, outside linebacker Cornelius Washington and cornerback Branden Smith haven’t announced their decisions publicly.

No players are expected to announce at the news conference they are entering the draft.

Quarterback Hutson Mason also is scheduled to be at the media availability. The Bulldogs’ backup has been considering transferring.

He’s reached his decision, but is holding off revealing it until that time. The guess would be he wouldn’t be there to announce he’s transferring.

He tweeted last night: “Going to bed with peace at mind. God has been great to me and has blessed me to make the right decision!!”
