Ex-Bulldog Colwill takes gold at Grand Prix

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Former Georgia diver Chris Colwill claimed first place on Sunday on the men’s 3-meter springboard at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix.

Colwill, a three-time NCAA champion for the Bulldogs, helped the United States roll up a total of seven medals during the meet, including three on Sunday.

Colwill edged China’s Li Shixin by .35 of a point, claiming gold with 475.30 points after taking the lead on his final dive, a reverse 3.5 tuck that earned 91 points. The gold was Colwill’s first international victory in the individual 3-meter event.

“My last dive is my favorite, and I have a lot of confidence in that dive. That’s why I save it for last,” Colwill said. “When I took off the board I felt like I was going to make it very easily.”

Colwill believes taking gold will help his preparation for the Olympic Trials next month.

“For my confidence it’s very big,” Colwill said. “I have a history of doing very good in prelims and semifinals and falling back a little bit in finals.”
