Emptying out the notebook with some odds and ends:
–Georgia has some options at outside linebacker if the Columbus AAU situation results in Jarvis Jones having to sit out games by the NCAA.
Chase Vasser is listed as Jones’ backup, but backup inside linebackers Mike Gilliard and Richard Samuel are already possibilities to play outside linebacker. That could clear room for freshmen Amarlo Herrera and Kent Turene at inside linebacker. Freshman Ramik Wilson from Tampa could play inside or outside.
–Outside linebacker T.J. Stripling (knee) is closer to getting back than defensive end Dexter Morant (shoulder) among defensive players returning from injury. Look for Stripling to get in the practice mix early in preseason camp to gauge how he is moving in space.
–Noticed that Auburn coach Gene Chizik’s book tour for “All In: What it Takes to Be the Best” includes stops in Kennesaw and Peachtree City on July 7. Is that Auburn or Bulldog Country?
–Incoming Georgia shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is ranked as the No. 41 prospect for the 2012 NBA draft by ESPN’s Chad Ford. Georgia fans hope he’s available to start the season.
Georgia contacted the NCAA and SEC after the Columbis Ledger-Enquirer report that Caldwell-Pope’s mother had a cell phone bill paid for by an unauthorized bank account connected to the AAU Georgia Blazers.
“A number of NBA scouts have been quietly buzzing about Caldwell-Pope,” Ford wrote. “The draft has been a bit devoid of quality shooting guards of late and Caldwell-Pope can really shoot the lights out. If he develops the other areas of his game he’s a potential lottery pick down the road.”
