Chris Burnette was part of a Georgia offense that racked up 567 total yards in Saturday’s 48-3 rout of Vanderbilt, but that was hardly the highlight of his weekend.
The 21-year old redshirt junior offensive lineman from LaGrange surprised his girlfriend, Arielle Haynes, by popping the question to her in a very public way at Athens Church on Sunday. Burnette prerecorded a video that was shown before asking for her hand in marriage.
She said yes.
“Great weekend,” Burnette said. “I don’t know if I can top that one.”
The moment was filmed and had nearly 15,000 views on YouTube as of Monday evening.
His teammates offered a flurry of congratulatory tweets on Sunday on Twitter.
Burnette said he was “about 99 percent sure” that he would get the answer he wanted to hear.
He told offensive line coach Will Friend Thursday about his plan.
Friend told him to make sure that she was going to say yes before Burnette invited teammates to join him at the church for the special moment.
Haynes, 24, is originally from Tampa. Burnette and Haynes met his freshman season through former Georgia tight end Orson Charles, who went to high school with her.
She lives in Roswell and works in public relations for a nonprofit, The Center for Family Resources.
No wedding date has been set yet.
“We’re shooting for something during the summertime next year,” Burnette said.
