Blog: Defending Mississippi State’s spread option, checking another game of interest

Georgia’s defense will get plenty of triple option football in its regular season finale against Georgia Tech, but should get a taste Saturday from Mississippi State’s spread option look.

“They do run a little bit of a spread option, which is kind of a pain,” Richt said. “It’s one thing to play a team like that where that’s all they do, but for a team to be as versatile as they are and then to run some triple option football, it’s just going to take time to prepare for and that’s what they want. They want you to take time preparing for that.”

Georgia already has faced the power running of South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore and the big arm of Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett.

“I feel like we’re going through the gauntlet a little bit just getting tested,” inside linebacker Christian Robinson said. “Sometimes you get pushed through some things to see what you can stop, what was effective and what we need to adjust to. If you don’t adjust, you can be in a world of hurt down the road.”

“They run a little Georgia Tech thing,” outside linebacker Darryl Gamble said. “We have a good idea of what’s going on. We’ve just got to go out there and execute.”

If you are planning to watch the Georgia game from home on Saturday, you can tune in an hour earlier at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 to see two former Georgia assistants go up against each other when Oklahoma (3-0) plays Cincinnati (1-2) in Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.

Granted, Oklahoma secondary coach and former Bulldogs defensive coordinator Willie Martinez and Cincinnati co-defensive coordinator and former Bulldogs linebackers coach John Jancek probably won’t get face time on camera.

Oklahoma is 74th in the nation in pass defense at 223.3 yards per game. That’s one spot behind you know who. Yep, Georgia.

The Sooners have five interceptions, tied for ninth in the nation. Four of those come from Martinez’s defensive backs.

Cincinnati is 62nd in the nation in total defense (347 yards per game) and 62nd in the nation in scoring defense (21.7).
