Georgia top fullback Merritt Hall is being medically disqualified, ending his collegiate career, Bulldogs starting quarterback Hutson Mason said Wednesday.
Hall’s latest concussion contributed to him having to give up the sport.
“I talked to him yesterday on the bus coming back from Ramsey (on the Bulldogs’ pool day) and he was obviously pretty upset about it,” Mason said. “He said he wanted to stay involved as much as he could without having to coach or be a G.A. You just feel bad for the kid and you realize how tough a position that is. You’re kind of just sacrificing your body and your head. Those concussions are so serious.”
Georgia has not confirmed Hall’s status but the Bulldogs moved inside linebacker Detric Bing-Dukes to fullback earlier this week.
“I think they’re trying to figure out that position right now,” Mason said.
North Oconee product Taylor Maxey and Christian Payne, from Prince Avenue, are also practicing at fullback. Payne also moved from inside linebacker.
“They’ve been doing a great job,” tailback Todd Gurley said of Bing-Dukes and Payne.
“They’ve just been learning a lot these last two days so I feel like they’re going to be pretty good in the future. …I believe in everybody. We’ve still got 12 more practices so guys can get a lot better.”
Georgia already had moved Quayvon Hicks to a tight end/H-back role this spring. He said Wednesday that he hasn’t been asked to move back to fullback.
Hall, a junior from Alpharetta, played in 25 games the past two seasons, starting seven games. He had just three carries for nine yards, but his role was to serve as a lead blocker.
“Merritt said it wasn’t really necessarily how many concussions he had it was how he responded to that last concussion and the symptoms he was having that kind of threw a red flag,” Mason said.
With Hall no longer playing, how much Georgia will have a fullback on the field will be worth watching going forward.
“I don’t know right now,” Mason said. “I think it’s a really good question because I think that coaches are pondering on that, especially losing an experienced fullback that we had.”
