Cole’s four hits lead Dog to rout of Winthrop

Freshman Hunter Cole led No. 9 Georgia’s 16-hit attack Friday, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs as the Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 13-5 victory over Winthrop.

The Bulldogs (5-0) recorded eight extra-base hits as starter Alex Wood pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs to go with five strikeouts and one walk. Earl Daniels, Chase Hawkins and Luke Crumley combined to pitch the final three innings. Daniels and Hawkins worked scoreless frames while Crumley allowed one hit and one run in the top of the ninth inning.

Cole was paced at the plate by Peter Verdin (two hits, two runs, two RBIs), Kyle Farmer (two hits, three runs, one RBI), Levi Hyams (two hits, two runs, two RBIs), Brett DeLoach (three hits, three runs, two RBIs) and Brandon Stephens (one hit, two RBIs).

Georgia, which scored four runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the eighth, will host Winthrop (0-5) in the second game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. today.
